The Liberty Takers were formed in Spring of 2012 and are based in Edinburgh.
The band started with a conversation between vocalist/guitarist Ricky Toner, from garage/folk rock band Coup d’etat & ex The Thanes/The Offhooks and The Sinister Urge member - Calvin Burt.
They jammed briefly under the name Coup d’etat and after ex The Offhooks/The Sinister Urge guitarist Barry Stark had posted online about needing a new chicken-head knob for his early 60’s Vox Phantom prototype (which is rarer than hen’s teeth), Ricky contacted Barry & asked if he’d be interested in joining his old band-mate, Calvin, for a new garage band.
After some house jams between Barry and Ricky, they had the basis of what would be The Liberty Takers' first songs.
As the months went by it was time to get in to a rehearsal room and a bass player was required. Calvin knew a guy from a few chance meetings at a pub in Leith that he manages and the final member Alistair MacDonald (recording engineer who once worked on The Magical World of the Strands album of the same name, as a tape op) joined not long after, around the end of summertime/beginning of Autumn.
Alistair has now been replaced by Beano Jameson of various psych bands including his current side project The Holy See (Hammond/movie soundtrack group) featuring various members including Magic Bus member & ex Kula Shaker/Oasis keys player Jay Darlington. Beano joined just before the bands last gig with Liverpool band The Wicked Whispers in 2014.
Sunstone Records are pleased to announce that we will be releasing The Liberty Takers ep this year.
It's about time these tunes are committed to wax, and are played as loud as your chicken-head knobs will take it.
